The Premiere of the Mauritian Film Vansh at MCine Trianon
The film’s premiere took place at MCine Trianon on 8 March, gathering cast members, supporters, and members of the Mauritian film community. Lead actor Shameer Abdul Raman also addressed the audience, sharing a personal moment as he thanked God and his mother for their support throughout his journey.
Audience members who attended the premiere responded positively to the film, praising both the performances and the effort to tackle deeper themes. The film is now preparing for its wider theatrical release after Eid at MCine Mauritius.
Shameer Abdul Raman Takes the Lead in Vansh
At the centre of Vansh is supermodel/ actor Shameer Abdul Raman, a familiar face in Mauritius thanks to his long career in modelling. Known for his strong presence on the runway, he has also spent many years working as a steward with Air Mauritius, while mentoring aspiring models as a model coach.
Shameer has openly spoken about the criticism he has faced throughout his career. Rather than letting it discourage him, he prefers to turn negativity into motivation, using it as a driving force to keep progressing. In other words: “haters, thank you for your service.”

Jannat Khan in the Mauritian Movie Vansh
Then there is Jannat Khan, who already has a strong public presence thanks to TikTok and social media. In Vansh, she takes on a key role in a film that pushes her into a different space.
Originally from Saudi Arabia and raised in India, Jannat later settled in Mauritius after arriving on the island at 19. Life did not exactly hand her a soft-focus montage. A mother of two, she faced several personal and financial challenges following her divorce.
Her advice is simple: “Work and become independent, so you do not become a burden on your family.”
Over the years, she took on different jobs while gradually rebuilding stability in her life. With Vansh, she now steps into a major role in cinema.
A Mauritian Film Exploring Mental Health with a Bollywood Touch
Now here is where Vansh gets interesting.
The story explores the complex dynamics of a relationship shaped by mental health struggles, anger, and emotional turmoil. While Shameer Abdul Raman plays Akshay, the film also highlights the impact of violence and psychological distress on both partners, with Jannat Khan portraying a woman caught in a painful cycle of conflict and reconciliation.
Rather than relying solely on glamour or romance, the film tackles the serious issue of domestic violence, reflecting situations that often remain hidden behind closed doors. The film wraps it in a familiar Bollywood-inspired style – dramatic storytelling, emotional intensity, music, the works, while remaining firmly rooted in a Mauritian creative environment.

“Vansh” Directed by Preetila Jumungall
The film is directed by Preetila Jumungall, a Mauritian filmmaker whose background in social work and psychology influences the themes explored in Vansh.
Drawing from her experience working closely with communities, she uses the film to shed light on domestic violence and mental health.
Music Highlight from the Movie Vansh
Of course, a film with Bollywood influences was never going to skip the music.

Music plays an important part in shaping the atmosphere of Vansh, adding emotion and dramatic weight to the story. One of the featured songs in the film is “Mera Mahi Sohna”, performed by Z-Shaan and Mariam.
A Growing Spotlight on Mauritian Cinema
With films like Vansh, Mauritian cinema is clearly gaining confidence. Local filmmakers are not just experimenting with style anymore – they are also taking on stories that feel socially relevant and emotionally raw.

The film is expected to release at MCine cinemas across Mauritius after Eid this year, offering local audiences another opportunity to support homegrown cinema on the big screen.
